I think this cave was like a prison cell. Besides the chains keeping them there, I think the cave was also restricting them from going anywhere else. In A Bend in the Road, I think the town would represent the cave in “The Allegory of the cave”. New Bern, North Carolina was just like any old fashioned small town...
