Her fragile, broken heart was compared to a "small piercing?as if in the earlobe" (Garren, 1). It is apparent this woman's fragile heart has been pierced with unexpected, severe sorrow and ache. But ironically enough, this small piercing she first mentions is big enough "for a decade to fit through" (Garren, 6) implying that their relationship lasted ten years and within a small amount of time of the ten years, it was all gone...
