The first line of the epigraph alludes to Marlow's encounter of Kurtz in Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Marlow describes Kurtz as a "hollow sham" of a man in that his supposed outlook on life is dreary to the point of nonexistence (Conrad 2378)...

Upon first reading the epigraph and researching the two lines I felt that while the allusion to Conrad was indeed relevant, I did not understand how the second line held any pertinence to the poem...
