In the opening sequence of the film, it shows a group of city council men talking about how the case might "put Hillsboro on the map." Not worried about the true issue at hand, they proceed with a decision to hold a trial in hopes of material gain and recognition. The irony, is that due to the mockery made of the case, the judge is asked to quickly end the trial so that no more embarrassment might come to the town... displayed next 300 characters
