America was founded upon freedoms to allow its citizens to make personal choices. Think back to the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts of the 1760s. Americans were outraged with having to pay higher taxes on certain goods from Britain and were forced to rebel. Is this not the same issue that is developing today? If the government was really concerned about peoples health, why wouldn't they ban smoking completely instead of creating higher taxes to pull in billions of extra dollars a year? The higher tax would deter people from purchasing tobacco at such a high price and they would instead buy cheaper tobacco off the black market...
