The factories produced so much smoke and ash that it covered the houses and ground, not to mention the inside of children's lungs. The sanitation in most parts of the town was probably so bad, that even the hospitals were unclean.
If I had been able to plan the city, I would have made sure all the factories and train tracks were on one end of the city, and all the people and stores were on the other...

The roads would have been better placed, and the stores, pubs, and churches would have been placed so that they were more easily reachable by everyone's standards...
