He felt that religion was only an accident of birth, the result of a person's cultural heritage. Second, Voltaire believed in rule by reason and fairness, but didn't trust the common people. He supported the idea of a benevolent dictator. We’re not personally supposed to be inspired by Candide. Our hero never triumphs over injustice, nor do we see hope for his future; but Voltaire believed that satire could inspire social change, even if it doesn’t inspire us as individuals, because strong, humorous satire draws attention to problems and provokes a response to those problems... displayed 300 characters
