According to Machiavelli there are three main types of principalities: hereditary, mixed and new. In hereditary the power is passed down through the ruling family. Mixed principalities occur when new territories are added to an existing one and can be of two types; when new territory shares common language, habits and customs the prince should hold the former ruling line; and the other one is when the new territory has different language and culture, then the prince must either reside in it or set up colonies...
