The line length within the poem gives the impression of 5 separate stanzas, of four sets of 3 followed by a single line. It may be that each ‘stanza’ is meant to attract the attention of each of our senses therefore we as the reader are given a full sensory impression of the opening scene. From the opening line we are given a feeling of decline and possibly despair by describing the nights as ‘winter’, which usually means, long, slow evenings and short, busy days, this idea is relevant later in the poem. Also, winter is usually seen as a lull in natural life, animals hibernate and people tend to be less energetic, this could reflect the emotions of the city, they too have hibernated as a community and lack the energy or days to rebuild their society...
