The line length within the poem gives the impression of 5 separate stanzas, of four sets of 3 followed by a single line. It may be that each ‘stanza’ is meant to attract the attention of each of our senses therefore we as the reader are given a full sensory impression of the opening scene. From the opening line we are given a feeling of decline and possibly despair by describing the nights as ‘winter’, which usually means, long, slow evenings and short, busy days, this idea is relevant later in the poem.
