In the beginning of Allegory, Socrates provides an image to Glaucon. That image is a dark cave, with prisoners chained together so that they may only see what is in front of them. Behind them lies a fire, and behind that fire is a “low wall built along the way….over which they show the puppets.” For the prisoners, the only reality they know is the shadows of these puppets, which they see on the wall in front of them...
