Scout feared that Jem was dead, but he was only unconscious with a broken arm. When they find that Ewell was dead, Atticus tries vehemently to tell the sheriff that Jem killed him out of self-defense, but the Sheriff realizes that Boo killed him, and says that Ewell must have just fallen on his own knife...
