In that passage alone, Golding connected Ralph’s despair to two of the main themes of the novel. But a passage like that would be obsolete if the event that occurred was not joyous or happy, or whatever mood the author was attempting to evoke. I personally have a soft spot for people who fail to succeed despite putting up a valiant effort, much like this book I read, which unfortunately cannot remember the name to, a high school football team lost the state championship when it looked like they were going to win...
