So I tried several ways and finally figured how I could get the thief out of six bags in two weighings. So then I knew it I divided the bags so that there were three on each side, and three left out on the side. I could then find the answer in three weighings. If you put three bags on each side of the scale and the scale tips one way you know the counterfeit gold is in those six bags, but if it is equal then you know that the counterfeit gold is in the three bags on the side if that is true then you would exchange one of the sets of three bags for the three that were left out in the first weighing...
