1st stage: synovitis (inflammation of synovial membrane) developing from the congestion and oedema of the membrane lining and joint capsule
2nd stage: formation of the pannus (thickened layer if synovium and synovial stroma consisting of the inflammatory cells(macrophages,neutrophils,etc),granulation tissue& fibroblasts) which grows over the cartilage depriving it from its nutrients which I would think lead to the cell death(necrosis) and as it is avascular it cannot repair itself &eventually destroy the joint capsule and bone performed by the enzymes produced by the synovial cells...
